This week’s FriFotos theme is “Hills”.  Of course, the first thing that came to mind was the song “The hills are alive with the Sound of Music…” (yes, showing my age).  While I’ve done the Sound of Music tour when I visited Salzburg, it was before the digital camera (again showing my age) and have only film prints.  So in lieu of those famous hills, here are a few hills (what I might think are mountains, but hey, I’m not a local) around the world and what you will find on and in them.

Easter Island – Rano Raraku (the Quarry)

The Quarry is a highlight on any visit to Easter Island as it is littered with Moai up here, over there and down below.  Of interest in the historic photos is that archeologists did excavate a Moai and it has a massive bottom to it – then then covered it back up so that you will see the famous heads you do now.  The old time photos were so enlightening and provided even more mystery to how the inhabitants were able to carve the massive Moai and move them around the island.

South Africa

Kirstenbosch Gardens and its floral kingdom lie along the side of the mountain with its many hills.  The views are stunning and the quiet serenity in the garden just a wonderful place to marvel at nature.

New Zealand

I say side of the mountain, no one else seemed to think the same, so get set for adventure in Queenstown on the South Island at the luge track.

Elsewhere in New Zealand, you were bound to see the sheep inhabiting the hills or coming down to cause a bit of a traffic jam

Botswana

On a walking safari, apparently when you see one buffalo the herd is not too far behind.  My guide motioned me to move quickly to the hill with the others.  A hill in the middle of the Okavango Delta?  There shouldn’t be a hill here but alas if you are a termite, you build a (massive) hill.  Thankfully, as it wasn’t mating season all were inside (I didn’t want to even think about how many that might be given the size of this hill).  The hills are quite large and sturdy as about six adults were up on top looking toward the herd of buffalo in the distance.

South Coast of Dublin

On the Photography tour of the South Coast of Dublin, we had to climb a hill, just a little huff and puff to see the coastline below.  It was a great view but we all found the kids having more fun climbing even more to be “on top of the….hill”
